A quick chat on self-care
When your phone goes dead you immediately plug it in to recharge. When your gas tank gets low, you stop to refuel, right? Well, what do you do when your body and mind need recharging or your energy level is running low and you just can't seem to go anymore? Sis, if your body is saying, “Please give me some rest.” Then you better take heed. I suggest you stop and Self-Care ASAP! What is Self-Care? Sources say that self-care is the practice of taking action to improve one's health, well-being, and happiness. It is a must for your health and overall lifestyle. Developing a self-care regimen is beneficial to your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. There are several ways you can practice self-care. Examples include hot baths, taking a walk, relaxing, exercise, going to bed earlier, or taking a mental health day from work. These are just to name a few. *Giving your body the rest and care that it needs, lead to less stress, reduced anxiety, and an overall positive mood. #GoodVibesOnly!
To kick this one off, let me give you a personal illustration. It was a long day at work. I had to hurry home to cook dinner and get ready to take my son to baseball practice. But when I arrived home (later that night) it was time to eat dinner, help the kids with homework, and prepare for the next day. Now, in the process of preparing for my night, my phone was ringing, I was receiving all kinds of text messages and social media alerts. I absolutely had no time for this! Girl, I had to turn that ringer off and unplug myself, mentally. Why? Because I had to protect my mental and physical well-being. And no, I wasn’t being selfish. I just needed to practice self-care. With that being said, I know that many may think it's selfish or inconsiderate, but only you know when you're turning into a Hot Mess! So my advice would be to set those boundaries and take care of yourself, boo.
When should I Self-Care?
I know you’re probably saying, how do I find the time to incorporate self-care into my busy lifestyle? Sis, I totally get it! I’m a single mom, working full-time, and managing this blog. So relaxing and rejuvenating are nowhere on my To-Do-List. However, I finally had to make the decision to ditch the list and make time for myself. At first this was difficult, yet the more effort I put into practicing self-care, I saw a complete change in my attitude and mental health. Honestly, I really have to say that there really isn't a right or wrong time to develop your self-care routine. You just have to figure out what times and methods work best for you. Actually, let me share with you a few of my self-care tips. Every night, I make time to a take a long, hot bath. This is my time to meditate and relax. Also, reading is another part of my self-care routine. I encourage you to get a book that you are really interested in, and find a comfortable area to unwind (my glass of wine is with me, as well). ;-) And lastly, take a walk. During my walks is when I have my conversations with God. Self-care with God is very, very important also. Spending time alone with Him is what brings me true fulfillment and peace. So, now that you know the importance of self-care and how beneficial it is to your health and wellness, I want to encourage you to evaluate your schedule and find ways to fit some ME TIME into it. Start by performing self-checks at least one day a week to evaluate your mind, body and spirit. Create a list of ways you can improve your lifestyle mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I believe when you start taking care of yourself, you will begin to feel better, look better, and you’ll attract better. It all starts with YOU! Sis, don't wait any longer. Start self-care today!
